This year for Megacon Orlando my husband and I decided to go as Cuphead and Mugman! If you don’t already know, Cuphead is a video game inspired by cartoons of the 1930s. It’s also incredibly difficult to beat!
We’re huge fans of Cecil Grimes and stop by his booth every year for a photo. This year was no exception, despite barely fitting inside!
We had originally planned to do a full DIY tutorial, but time got away from us and it was a tumultuous sprint to finish! We’re more than willing to answer any questions though if you send an email or leave a comment.

Head instructions
I’m sorry these aren’t more descriptive with more photos, but you know how it goes. You start with plenty of time, things go wrong, life happens, and then you’re rushing to finish!
- Cover an exercise ball in plastic wrap. Then cover that in duct tape.
- Measure the circumference of the ball and mark out 1/4 of it and cut.
- Cut slices into the triangle so that it lays flat.
- Use this as a pattern to trace 4 pieces onto upholstery foam.
- Cut out the pieces using an electric bread knife. Utility knife or scissors will work, but the edges won’t be as clean.
- Glue the edges of one piece together using barge contact cement.
- Glue all 4 pieces together.
- Wrap it in a ratchet strap (or something similar) until it dries completely.
- This is where we went into “omg we’re never going to finish in time” panic mode so no more photos. Cut out the shape for the mouth before wrapping the cup in stretchy fabric and gluing down using Super 77. Cover the mouth in a sheer black fabric. This is where you will see out of so make sure it’s thin enough that you still have decent vision. Cut the tongue out of felt and glue in.
- Cut out the eyes from a thinner foam and cover that in fabric as well. We used felt for the pupils and bias tape piping for the edges.
- The noses are just styrofoam balls covered in fabric.
- The straws are fencer wire shaped and secured, then wrapped in fabric.
- The top is a piece of foam insulation board that was cut, covered in fabric, and glued into the top of the head. Be sure to leave a hole to put in the straw.
Hi – I stumbled upon your site and I have to say I am VERY impressed with your Cuphead and Mugman cosplay! I am working on a Cuphead costume and I was hoping you can share any info on how the heads and Mugman’s boots were constructed. Cheers!
I’m going to update this post soon with more info on the heads but for the boots we just made a rough shape with cardboard, some cheap shoes, and expanding foam. You can shape the foam with pretty much any sharp knife but we used an electric bread knife. I’m attaching some photos that I hope help!
I updated the post with some more instructions and a few photos for the head. I’m sorry that took me so long to post. I’d love to see photos of your Cuphead when you’re done!!
Hello, I reall love both your Mugman and Cuphead cosplay. I am working on one for my son, but want to know how to make the Mugman head. Any ideas? Thank you.
I updated the post with some more instructions and a few photos! I hope it helps. I’d love to see photos when you’re done!!
Can you upload the pattern and give the outer length and widths at top?
Unfortunately, I don’t have the pattern anymore. We threw it out when we were finished. The top is approximately 32″ wide and 16″ long. We used this 95cm size exercise ball. Hope that helps!
